Setting up Two Factor Authentication
NOTE: You can avoid using an Authenticator and opt instead to just get a call and/or txt message every time you wish to authenticate.
- Download an authenticator. For most people this means just going to app store and download Microsoft Authenticator. (Its free).
**Other authenticators are available (and most) will work just fine. So if you have one you like to use feel free to try.**
- Log in to Office 365.
Email address: your email address
Password: your Windows Password
You will be receive a call or a text message to the phone number associated with your account. If the phone number displayed is not your phone number, call the IT department for help. You will not be able to proceed.
A code will be displayed, disregard it as it will not be used in future steps.
Once completed you should be taken to the main screen. Should look something like the image below.
- Once there click on the “settings” icon.
- Then choose “Update contact preferences.”
5. On the next screen click on “Security info”
- Finally click on “Add method” and choose Authenticator app. Keep hitting next until you see a QR code on the screen
- You will be sent a “push” authentication to your phone to confirm it is working properly. You can either use click “approve” (Microsoft Authenticator) or enter the passcode if you used another authentication app.
- While still under the security info tab choose Change to adjust the Default sign-in method from
Phone – Text – 214.xxx.xxxx to Microsoft Authenticator Notification and hit OK. If you are using a 3rd part authenticator app please choose Authenticator App or Hardware Token and hit OK.
